Today, my dear readers, I am just sharing this foto from a recent trip to Socal. To remind us all that there is not much better, than getting into a car with good friends, listening to some excellent tunes and roadtripping your way into the sun! Things can be that simple. Anywhere. Enjoy this Simple Song and start (California) dreaming.

Today I have decided to share some of my best kept secrets with you, my dear readers, as I feel we all should never underestimate the joy and impact of good hosting! So here's my take on how to WOW the tastebuds of your nearest & dearest.
Numero 1.) Fab Faultless Feta Dip
You just CANNOT go wrong with this addictive 5 min prep time winner. I have made this on several occasions and Guests ALWAYS have been all over it. ("What?? You made this yourself???")
So here's the how..
Ingredients (for approx 6-8 people):Base:
- 5-6 ounces Feta

Add either of the next to determine the flavor:

- Grilled Peppers OR
- Green Olives
Instructions:
Just mix all the ingredients! Put it into the fridge for one or 2 hours and decorate it in a nice bowl with some Oregano on top! Voila!
Dip Appropriate Soundtrack:
While preparing and mixing the ingredients, I would highly recommend AC DC's High Voltage, which built up beautifully while the Dip transforms into a creamy dream of mediterranean flavor!
When the guests arrive I would heat up the room with 2003 Eurovision (EuroTRASH) winner Turkey's Sertab Erener – Everyway that I can, and greet your guests with some Shakira-esque moves (or not)!
2.) Perfectly Palatable Puff Pastry Petits Fours
If you think the the Feta Dip was easy, check this one out! The perfect allrounder Puff Pastry will enable you to create the most amazing looking little appetizers in just minutes of prep time. (And 10 min max in the oven!)

Chinese Whispers - Or the Beauty of Inter-Human, Cross-Cultural and -Gender communication..
Love is in the air. Not. Anymore. At least not in those moments when you feel like throwing with fruits (??) frustrated and feeling handicapped by the limitations of our human communication and perceptions. I guess we have all felt that way at some point during our relationship, at work, with our parents, siblings, neighbors??? (Or maybe its just me..)
Au Bureau
Now as a business professional, having worked in International corporations in different countries for more than a decade you would think you'd seen it all! Communication techniques GALORE! Understanding different work styles and preferences to communicate, Meyers Briggs (Love!) countless personality, color tests (I am Red, Yellow with a good portion of Gold.. Right..), Sandwich tactics, Watzlawick, and more and last but not least mastering the world language ENGLISH. What else do we need, one would think?
I have to admit I have been fascinated by this topic ever since this very pivotal moment years ago, when I was participating in an International project, sitting in a meeting at a table with one Italian colleague, one French one British and myself. Heated debate! Everyone speaking perfect English. Company language - Fullstop. And literally no-one-understanding-the other AT ALL!!!
Unbelievable. I was stunned (and frustrated as everyone else, in that moment) that we were simply and seemingly not able to explain each other our different view points. (And most importantly not considering each other's different cultural backgrounds). I still remember pondering for days about what went wrong in that meeting and how we could not understand each other. But then it dawned at me that it was probably the first time I really understood what Paul Watzlawick meant with Metacommunication..
So this is when it get's truly interesting. As if communication was not complicated enough already, when intercultural differences get added to the mix of personal preferences and preferred thought processes (i.e. Bottom Up vs Top Down etc) level of emotionality and rationality, as well as external circumstances.
OF COURSE I did not study this and most certainly do not intend to pretend expertise in this field, but I cannot deny that I have been fascinated by this topic, having lived and worked in different countries abroad for the last almost 9 years and even more importantly having married Internationally. (Oh SUCH potential for misunderstandings when it comes to family dynamics..! ;-) )
A la Maison
Nowadays there are endless curriculums & studies about managing cultural diversity and understanding and collaborating better, and global companies have long understood the importance of investing in this area.
But how does this work at home? At my home for example.
Oh, what would it be boring if we would always understand each other, right..? But seriously. Sometimes things could be easier.
My husband and I communicate in a for us foreign language. English. So besides the usual Woman vs Man (Venus vs Mars) misunderstandings imagine the same thing with a hint of that good old game commonly known as "Chinese Whispers", Or in France "Telephone" or in Germany "Stille Post" or.. (OK, here it starts already..!).
So I'm about to say something that in my mind and my language is absolutely NO ISSUE at all (for me :)). Then I say it in English, already changing the tone one nuance (due to my linguistic limitations) and when my husband receives the message converting it back into his language (all happening in nano seconds of course) we have arrived at a full grown and proper misunderstanding! (And suddenly a basic question/suggestion arrives as a blame..)
ME suggesting on a hot day: "Why don't you go outside and water the plants?"(Suggestion, right?) HE: "WHAT? Why do you always say"Why don't you...??? As if I was not doing this???" (Blame!)
Okay..
Needless to say, its of course NEVER my fault! (Pout face..)
But in all seriousness, one thing I have learned and am still learning everyday is the need to LISTEN and to take the benefit of the doubt! Not everything is meant the way we receive the message.
(Good old Watzlawick again..)
But why do we refuse to use the same communication techniques we have learnt to use in a professional environment at home?
That's probably a good thing, as this is where we are showing emotions (and sure should!) and who doesn't like to throw a lemon every once in a while?
L'Amour
And then there is the the endless potential arguments, the spice in every relationship, the moments when we get confronted with simple system shut-down of our rationale side, forgetting our etiquette and most of what we learned, when we are facing some of the interesting gender or personality dynamics in some relationships. These personality trades can of course vary and are not tied to Gender. Below is just one example, that I got inspired by through Meyers Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI) (and maybe my own life?? ;-) )
Man (INTP): "Tomorrow I'm going to do the laundry"
Woman (ESFJ): (Immediately registering this timeline, which the man set, in her naturally built-in internal "schedule-and-to-do-list center" and working with it. Tictoc tictoc)) "That's great. Thanks! Could you by any chance include my favorite dress that I wanna wear the day after?"
Man: "Sure thing!"
Next day. Something else came up and laundry was not done.
One more day later.
Woman: (Seeing the dress, she wanted to wear, still in the dirty laundry basket. Shrieking tone of voice and puffing sharp breath out.)
"I thought you wanted to do laundry yesterday??? Why did you not do it? And WHY did you not at least say something??? Now I can't wear my favorite dress today!" (Pulling a face and stomping with the foot.. (Okay, I'm exaggerating a little..)
Man: "Really? Are you freaking out over Laundry? Are you for real??"
For the Man who had a MBTI preference for "Thinking" as well as "Perceiving", missing this deadline was clearly not a huge deal and certainly not something he would get emotional over.
For the woman, however, the timeline the man set was something she built into her planning and relied on it, as she had a preference for "Judging". The fact that she was also stronger on the "Feeling" side of things according to Meyers Briggs (or simply said more emotional) made her react, taking the missed timeline personal and the the lack of heads-up as a sign of disrespect.
I did mention that you will find some "hobby psychology" on my blog, right??? So just to reiterate.. These are just my 2 cents and personal observations. :)
But wouldn't it be boring if it wasn't like this??

The Fashion Trap - Or 10 great ways to relieve yourself from acute wardrobe congestion
Ok, so it took me a while (30 yrs?) to figure out, that I was actually NOT this avantgardistic fashion-forward trendsetter who surprisingly always had a sense for what people would want to wear next, but rather incredibly and creepily influenced (brainwashed?) by fashion magazines. YES! I was not aware.
And YES, I do like shopping and despite my everyday morning wardrobe crisis, I might have too many dresses, jeans, skirts, suits, shirts, costumes, maxi-dresses, .. (oh my) in my closet. But It was only a while ago that I noticed the strong effect fashion magazines had on my buying pattern.
Not only did I notice a connection between the immediate urge to treat myself to an adhoc shopping spree, whenever visually consuming the glossy, short-lived indulgence of my usual fashion magazine, but more scarily so, did I find myself almost remotely controlled, marching through stores, on a mission to find the most absurd "en-mode" pieces which I, lured by the promise of unlimited attractivity, youth and the perfect (commercial) life when seeing my "mirror-slimmed"self in the fitting room, absolutely NEEDED to buy.
Not seldom did these items share the common qualities of
- not fitting with anything I have in my wardrobe
- not making me look anything other than ridiculous and age-conflicted
- neither office nor socially wearable
- welcomed by my husband with an expression of sheer horror ("What?? You want to wear THIS (white 7/8th trousers with Jungle print below the knee.. I know.) at the conference???)
- and once back at home and in REALITY left with a feeling of wonder, how I EVER could have thought I NEEDED this..
- once in the closet never got out any further than in front of my bedroom mirror. And back. And out.
And there we are. Fashion victims, suffocating under lots and lots of useless pieces, feeling the guilt of over-consumption, inable to see through the dense forest of clothes.
What now? Time to de-clutter!
Here are my Top 10 Tips to relieve yourself from wardrobe congestion (In no particular order):
- Donate clothes to charity collections! Do good, feel good! :-)
- Bring them to H&M to recycle them! Yes you heard correctly! The environmentally conscious Fashion Giant from Scandinavia is the first Retailer that will reward you for bringing old or unwanted clothes from any Brand into their stores.
- Share the love with your sister, cousin, niece.. Maybe your 10 year younger cousin might in fact look fabulous in it! :-)
- Sell clothes to 2nd Hand Resellers/Vintage stores, either at your local thrift store OR at hot "new kids on the block" like Threadflip! (LOVE!) They even have a "concierge service: where all you need to do is throw all items into a box and send them off and Threadflip will take care of the rest.
- Invite your friends for a good old clothes swap session! Everyone brings 10 items, turn up that 60ies BossaNova and prepare some homemade Petits Four (Easy with Puff Pastry!) & Hugo's (Must Try!!!) and everyone is happy! :-)
- If you don't have friends with too many clothes or don't want to invite them, swap clothes online at sites like StyleSwap.
- Start a non-profit clothes sale at your company, school, university, etc! Maybe your company might even match the profits for charity. Fun team building exercise as well!
- Sell at a local Fleamarket!
- If they are torn, done, overly worn just throw them away. YOU CAN DO IT! (But recycle!)
- Last but not least you could always buy a sewing machine, check out some "How To sew"Videos, tear some beautiful textiles apart and create something new! :-) Creative outlet, people!
That's it! Easy.
Let the games begin encore une fois.. But they don't call it Retail therapy for nothing.
Hello World! (Couldn't resist..) So, this is actually my 2nd attempt of blogging! The first round found a rather premature end, due to my untamed perfectionism, combined with a slight disconnect between me, my topics and what I was trying to achieve, leading into a staged, unnatural and potentially "boring" end product, resembling a mix of culinary recipes meet random encyclopedia, and ended in neglect.
I guess when it takes you weeks to think about a potential new post, something went wrong..
This time I decided to get REAL and write about what I (and hopefully some of you!) actually care about. :-) Especially as life provides us with enough food-for-thought-outpour, and lately I felt more than ever the urge to share - thoughts, ideas, frustrations, favorite things in the world and the everyday moments that make me laugh, love or drive me nuts!
Like those little treasured moments, when you find yourself in bed at 3 am, engaged in a fierce argument with your French husband over whether the Germans or the French produce the better bread! (Me:"You French already have the Cheese and the Wine, and for the record, French bread is a one-trick-pony compared to Germany's bread tradition!!!" He:"German Baguette & Croissants - are you kidding me?" Me: You don't get the point..!") And by the way, imagine that, in this low-carb-anti-histamin-gluten-free world!
Oh yes, who thought relationships were complicated per se, just mix in different languages and cultures and it gets REALLY exciting! But I wouldn't want it any other way! :-)
Be prepared for a miscellaneous collection of tips, topics and trends bursting of joyful self indulgence, a hint of hobby psychology, a good amount of multi cultural anecdotes and a lot of love for life from just another average Generation-X-pre-motherhood (tic toc!)-values-driven-philantrophic-career-oriented & "Leaning-In"-hyper-emotional-Food&Music-obsessed-modern-nomad-still-lost-between-wanting to become-a-rockstar-an-internet-startup-billionaire-OR-settling-with-5-kids-on-a-farm-WOMAN,WIFE & WANNABE! :-)
Nothing revolutionary but maybe a Potpourri, worthwhile.
